Samkna is the first open-water offshore aquaculture project in the State of Qatar. Established in 2015 under White Rocks Holding, its farm sits 50 kilometres off the northeast coast at Al Ruwais, spanning 900,000 square metres with sixteen floating cages producing around 2,000 tonnes of fish a year. Its fish reach the market within eight hours of harvest, against days for imported stock.
The venture is explicitly tied to Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country's food security agenda — which made the identity's job larger than a product brand. Samkna had to work as a supermarket brand a shopper trusts at the fish counter, and as the mark of a national infrastructure project credible to government stakeholders and investors.
The name gave us the anchor. Samkna means "our fish" in Arabic — a claim of ownership and provenance built into the word itself, and precisely the brand's central argument: Qatari fish, raised in Qatari waters, not imported. The identity was designed to make that legible before anyone reads a word of copy.
We worked the mark up through sketch stages, resolving an abstract form into something precise enough to hold at every scale, then built the colour and type system around it.
Freshness is the hardest thing to convey in seafood branding and the easiest to get wrong. The system was built to look clean and contemporary rather than reaching for the nautical clichés the category defaults to — and to survive the range of surfaces a food brand needs, from chilled-counter packaging to corporate materials for a project of national significance.
